TOURNAMENT LEGACY
Brazil claimed their third World Cup title, becoming the first nation to win the trophy three times, which allowed them to keep the Jules Rimet Trophy permanently. The tournament is widely regarded as one of the greatest in history, featuring attacking football and iconic moments—such as Pelé's stunning pass to Carlos Alberto for Brazil's fourth goal in the final, and Gordon Banks' 'save of the century' from Pelé's header in the group stage. This was the first World Cup broadcast in color globally. It also introduced the first use of a substitute per team (up to two) and a new format with 16 teams divided into four groups of four, followed by knockout stages. Pelé, in his final World Cup, solidified his status as a legend with four goals and numerous assists.
